Our primary goal is to create an easygoing environment for playing baseball in Helsinki area. We want to give both new and more experienced players an environment to enjoy the sport. On a more competitive level, we try to go for the Finnish league championship each year.
The club is run by volunteer work. We try to play baseball with positive feelings and to give a possibility for coexistance of different baseball cultures from around the world. We develop players towards fair play while not forgetting personal competitiveness and ambition.
In Finland, pesäpallo or finnish baseball was developed in early 20th century as the Finnish sport ambassador Lauri Pihkala thought baseball was a bit slow and not so tactically interesting. And so pesäpallo became widely popular and the primary throwing and hitting sport in the country. However, no country outside of Finland plays this sport competitively. In the 70’s, some local players were starting to get interested in playing in a more international environment, and so interest in baseball started forming. Some players went to Sweden to learn baseball, and came back with enough information to start the Finnish baseball and softball federation in 1981. Puumat was then established in 1981 after local Wranglers BC lost their well known sponsor.
The first players came from Helsingin Puna-Mustat pesäpallo team as well as a volleyball team Katajanokan Haukat. Baseball was then starting from zero, but the players were already looking towards international competition. Puumat (meaning Pumas) practiced three times a week and many of the players also played in the national team.
Helsinki Devils separated from Puumat a couple of years later as some players had an idea for a new club. The Devils gained traction quickly and were able to obtain a hitting tunnel and a pitching machine for more quality practice. Devils and Puumat won several championships during this time. Devils stopped their activity from the beginning of the 90s until 2024, when they re-emerged as lower division team for Puumat.
Baseball was played on gravel fields for many years, and no pitchers mound was in use. The fields in Ruskeasuo and Meilahti are well known by many older players. The first true baseball field was built in Lahti during 2016 with volunteer work. The first field fulfilling international standards, the homefield for Puumat in Myllypuro, was constructed in 2019. The first Sweden-Finland game was played in Myllypuro in 2021. Since then, the field properties have been even more improved, new equipment added and new ideas implemented, but theres still a lot to do.
